The department consists of accredited specialists in General Surgery with sub-specialty interests in Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgical Oncology, Bariatric (Obesity) and Metabolic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery (key-hole surgery) and Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endoscopy. Our team of surgeons are committed to provide state of the art and evidence-based surgical management of various upper digestive tract diseases and general surgical conditions.
We work within multidisciplinary teams consisting of medical and radiation oncologists from National Cancer Centre Singapore(NCCS), gastroenterologists from Centre for Digestive and Liver Disease(CDLD) and endocrinologists, physiotherapists and dieticians from Obesity & Metabolic Unit (OMU), LIFE Centre SGH to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with common and complex upper digestive tract related diseases such as diseases of the oesophagus, stomach & intestines, gastrointestinal tumours (GIST), bile duct & gallbladder stones and obesity & metabolic disorders.
We evaluate and manage patients who present with either one or more of the following symptoms /complaints:
•Bloody/black stools, positive stool occult blood test
•Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)
•Dyspepsia / indigestion
•Gallstones/bile duct stones
•Heartburn / reflux
•Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome
•Unexplained weight loss
•Loss of appetite
The department also provides around the clock acute general surgical & emergency endoscopy services and performs surgery for hernias and conditions of the spleen, adrenal glands and retroperitoneum.
In minimally invasive surgery, surgeons use a variety of techniques to operate with less injury to the body than with open surgery. In general, it is as safe as open surgery and allows you to recover faster and heal with less pain and scarring.
•Management of gallstone disease including ERCP for bile duct stones.
•Laparoscopic Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery for obesity and obesity related diseases.
•Management of gastroesophageal reflux disease requiring fundoplication, paraoesophageal hernias, achalasia, oesophageal and gastric tumours, abdominal and groin hernias, hyperhidrosis, enlarged spleen where minimal access surgery may be useful.
•Diagnostic and staging laparoscopy for evaluation of tumours
•Adrenal gland surgery
