Ribociclib - What is it for

​Ribociclib is a medication used to treat hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative advanced breast cancer. It is used together with other breast cancer therapies such as Letrozole, Exemestane or Fulvestrant.

Ribociclib - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Ribociclib cause?

  • ​Nausea and vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Rash
  • Hair loss
  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Headache
  • Decreased white blood cells
    This may increase your chances of getting infections. To minimize your risk of getting infections, avoid crowds or being near people with infection.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Signs of infection - fever, chills, cough, sore throat
  • Unusual bruising, bleeding or black stools
  • Cough with chest pain or breathing difficulty
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or urine becomes dark tea-coloured
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, chest discomfort or severe giddiness

Before taking Ribociclib, what precautions must I follow?

  • ​Use effective birth control during and for at least 3 weeks after stopping treatment with Ribociclib. Inform your doctor if you plan for or suspect pregnancy.
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medications or supplements you are taking, or any other medical conditions you have e.g. heart disease.

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Ribociclib?

​Avoid taking the following fruits and their juices as they may increase your chances of experiencing side effects: grapefruit and pomegranate.

How should Ribociclib be used?

Take Ribociclib once daily with or without food, at approximately the same time each day. Follow your doctor's instructions on the amount and days to take this medication.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

​If you miss a dose of Ribociclib, skip the missed dose for that day. Take the next dose at your usual time the next day. Do not take 2 doses in the same day to make up for a missed dose.

What should I do if I overdose?

​If you overdose on this medication, inform your doctor immediately.
