Cancer Genetic Counselling Education

The Cancer Genetic Service plays a leading role in the education in cancer genetic counselling. The department offers the following ongoing education programmes:

Cancer Genetic Counselling Internship Programme

Ongoing

Provide clinical exposure for undergraduate, graduate students and recent college graduates who is interested in genetic counselling to gain hands-on experience working under the direction of genetic counsellors at Cancer Genetics Service at National Cancer Centre Singapore.

6-12 weeks attachment programme

The Cancer Genetic Internship programme provides interns/students with full-time, hands-on projects in cancer genetics and genetic counselling and clinical experience.

Interns will have the opportunity to shadow genetic counselors in cancer genetics clinics for hereditary cancer syndromes to observe the process from pre-test genetic counseling, clinical genetic testing to the interpretation of genetic results.

Goals of Internship:

Participate in clinical case preparation and some administrative duties (as needed) to familiarize intern with common hereditary cancer syndromes and practical aspects of genetic counselling
Observe cancer genetics clinics
Attend weekly genetics case review meeting and journal clubs

Cancer Genomic Medicine Fellowship Programme

Provide training structure for physicians who is interested in further training in cancer genomic medicine

12-month fellowship program

The Cancer Genomic Medicine Fellowship Programme provides doctors with mentored clinical and research training in clinical cancer genomics.

Understand the principles of human genetics and human cancer genetics in the clinical care setting.
Diagnose, manage, and counsel patients with genetic disorders and cancer predisposition syndromes.
Recognise cancer genetic traits in families and in cancer genetic differential diagnoses.
Identify and perform molecular techniques for genetic analysis and interpretation.
Be familiar with the utilisation of genomic alterations in selecting targeted therapies for treatment and risk stratification.
