What is Cisplatin for?

Cisplatin is an intravenous chemotherapy used alone or in combination with other agents for the treatment of certain types of cancer.


Side Effects


What are some common side effects of Cisplatin?

Early side effects

  • About 4 to 12 hours after treatment, nausea and vomiting are commonly experienced. These may recur for several days.
    There are medications available, which may prevent or decrease these side effects. If you are given these medications, take them as directed.

Delayed side effects

  • A drop in the white blood cell counts may occur 7 to 14 days after treatment.
  • Temporary hair loss or thinning may begin several weeks after treatment.
  • Difficulty in hearing, ringing or stuffed sensation in the ears may occur several weeks after treatment.
  • Numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the fingers, toes or face may occur.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Excessive vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours after treatment.
  • Fever of 38°C or higher, chills or sore throat.
  • Unusual decrease in urination.
  • Ringing in the ears.
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising or black tarry stools.
