Thrive, Not Just Survive: Dorothy’s Journey with Breast Cancer

In 2021, while the world was grappling with a global pandemic, Dorothy made a discovery that would change her life forever. For years before, she noticed a lump in her right breast, but it seemed to come and go with her monthly cycle. However, she began to experience a tugging pain in her breast. It was then that she found a second, smaller lump in her armpit and decided to seek medical advice. After a series of tests and biopsy, her cancer diagnosis was confirmed.

Dorothy's initial response was one of disbelief. Instead of succumbing to fear, Dorothy and her husband decided to approach the diagnosis as a problem to be solved. They researched extensively and discovered that breast cancer was relatively common in Singapore, affecting one in thirteen women annually. After further research, Dorothy positioned herself to confront the disease.

Her treatment journey included a lumpectomy with lateral intercostal artery perforator (LICAP), 16 rounds of chemotherapy, and 15 sessions of radiation therapy. While chemotherapy often brings severe side effects, Dorothy's were remarkably minimal, allowing her to continue her daily life. Radiation therapy however, left her feeling tired, with some stiffness in her right arm. Daily stretching became part of her routine, helping her regain strength and a full range of arm movements. She even hosted an international online calligraphy art exhibition while undergoing treatment, and embarked on art-making.

Throughout her journey, Dorothy was surrounded by a loving and supportive community. Her husband was a devoted caregiver, and her church and calligraphy friends showered her with gifts of food, flowers, cards and practical help. Dorothy posted regular updates on her Facebook page which served as a source of inspiration and education for her friends and allowed her to connect with others fighting the same battle.

Dorothy's passion for painting and calligraphy provided a well-spring of joy and emotional release and art became her anchor during the storm, offering solace and strength.

When asked for advice to others facing cancer, Dorothy emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive perspective. In the face of circumstances beyond our control, the one thing we can manage is our response. By choosing to think positively, she believed it was possible to thrive, not just survive.

Dorothy's cancer journey inspired her to give back. She had personally experienced the exceptional care provided by the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and her gratitude led her to start fundraising for the NCCS Cancer Fund. Beyond providing financial support, it was an opportunity to raise awareness about the needs of cancer patients and the vital work being done to support them.

Dorothy created and sold prints of her unique paintings of Peranakan conservation houses and contributed the sales proceeds to the NCCS Cancer Fund.

She also wrote a book titled "So Much Life Left to Live". The book is a hope-filled account of her breast cancer journey, filled with practical ideas and helpful considerations for the newly- diagnosed and their caregivers. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the book are also directed towards the NCCS Cancer Fund.
