Preventing Cancer

Preventing Cancer

1 in 3 of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. Researchers believe that up to 50% of all cancer deaths are preventable. This means that there are up to 3.7 million avoidable deaths per year worldwide.

Here at NCCS we want to eradicate cancer so that the next generation can live without the fear of a cancer diagnosis. With better methods of cancer prevention, detection and treatment we can reduce the numbers of preventable deaths.

The NCCS Cancer Fund supports educational programmes and publications to raise awareness of cancer. These include outreach activities which help educate the public about risk factors as well as signs and symptoms of cancer.

In addition we hope to establish the Centre for Cancer Prevention and Population Health to provide early cancer detection and prevention services for our community. The Centre will act as a leading hub for clinical, research and educational efforts in fighting cancer and helping us to eradicate cancer for the next generation.

Our key areas of focus are:

  • Risk factors: including genetic, biological, diet and lifestyle (e.g. smoking or lack of exercise) so we can help the public understand these risks and minimize their exposure to them.
  • Vaccination: providing clear guidance on cancer vaccinations that are available, and helping to develop new vaccinations for the future.
  • Screening: developing novel screening and surveillance methods to catch cancer early to reduce cancer deaths and to encourage the public to attend screening programmes.
  • Symptoms awareness: to ensure that everyone knows the indicators to look out for, helping people to spot potential cancer symptoms early and seek treatment sooner.

The Centre for Cancer Prevention and Population Health will enable the study of Asian cancers, the genetic disposition and risk factors that we face in the region, as well as provide guidance on the lifestyles changes we can make to reduce the chance of a cancer diagnosis.

This vital work would not be possible without the generosity of our donors: people like you. Donate today to help save lives.
