Palliative care, also increasingly known as supportive care, is a holistic approach to care which caters to a person’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, and provides practical support to the patient, family and caregivers. Supportive and palliative care aims to enhance the well-being and quality of life for all patients with serious illnesses such as cancer. It is not only for those who have advanced cancer or are at the end of life, but is appropriate at any age and any stage of a serious illness.

It is about:
• Emphasizing the quality of life from the point of diagnosis to after treatment completion or the end of life
• Providing relief from pain and distress related to the illness and its treatment
• Ensuring emotional, spiritual and practical support for patients and families

Facing the diagnosis of cancer and its treatment can be challenging for anyone. The Division of Supportive and Palliative Care in NCCS, which is made up of the unique departments of Palliative Medicine, Psychosocial Oncology, and Cancer Education and Information, is dedicated to providing quality, holistic care to all our patients.
