I am a Sri Lankan-born Australian living and working in Singapore since 2011. In July 2025, my connection to Singapore deepened unexpectedly through a personal health crisis.
While on a mission trip in Vietnam, I developed abdominal pain that persisted after returning to Singapore.
A visit to a general practitioner led to a CT scan, which revealed a tumour in my left kidney. A biopsy confirmed it was malignant.
We initially explored private healthcare but quickly realised the costs would be significant. Faced with returning to Australia or staying in Singapore, we chose to proceed with treatment at Singapore General Hospital as a private patient, a decision we have come to value.
Our first consultation with senior urologist Kenneth Chen gave us immediate confidence. His clarity, calmness and thorough explanations provided reassurance during an uncertain time.
I was subsequently referred to the National Cancer Centre Singapore where, under Dr Ravindran Kanesvaran, I underwent several months of treatment to shrink the tumour.
What stood out was the seamless collaboration across disciplines. My care involved an oncologist, haematologist and urologist, all working together.
On May 8, I underwent surgery to remove the tumour. The experience reinforced my trust in the system. Every aspect, from preparation to recovery, was handled precisely.
Equally important were the professionalism and empathy of the entire care team. Communication was clear, coordination seamless and every interaction reflected genuine care.
Singapore’s healthcare system combines world-class expertise, efficiency, coordination and care.
Beyond global rankings, what truly defines it is the patient experience – the confidence it inspires and the dignity it preserves. For me, this journey revealed what exceptional healthcare truly looks like.
