Profile

Dr Png Wenxian is a dual fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon in the area of foot and ankle surgery. He is a Consultant for the department of Orthopaedic Surgery, SKH. In addition, he holds an academic position as a Senior lecturer, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) as well as a Clinical instructor under the SingHealth Duke-NUS Musculoskeletal Sciences Academic clinical program.

Dr Png graduated with a Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore in 2009. He went on to complete his specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery and was appointed as Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Orthopaedics and Trauma) in 2020.

Dr Png was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Scholarship from the Ministry of Health to pursue subspecialty training in Foot and Ankle surgery. He first completed a clinical fellowship in foot and ankle deformity correction under the Manchester University NHS foundation trust, UK. He undertook training from Prof Anand Pillai who is a key opinion leader in the field of managing complex foot and ankle trauma and deformity. In line with his keen interest in minimally invasive surgery, Dr Png received further training in a second clinical fellowship under the mentorship of Dr Andreas Toepfer, Kantonsspital St.Gallen, Switzerland where he gained proficiency in advanced techniques in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery. He was subsequently accepted as a member of MIFAS by GRECMIP, an international society focused on research, education and clinical work in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery.

Dr Png’s subspecialty interest is in foot and ankle deformity, sports and cartilage injuries. In line with his fellowship training, he is a strong advocate of minimally invasive or ‘key-hole’ percutaneous techniques to enhance outcomes and improve post-surgical recovery. Under the training of renowned sports surgeon Dr Masato Takao, Jujo Hospital, Japan, he has pioneered a novel “key-hole” arthroscopic technique used to treat plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel pain. In addition, he is currently one of few surgeons to use the technique of a single incision percutaneous minimally invasive incision in the treatment of bunion foot deformity.

Dr Png also treats a complete range of foot and ankle conditions. His clinical expertise includes the management of

  • Bunions (hallux valgus) and claw toes

  • Flatfoot and arch deformities

  • Diabetic foot wounds and deformity

  • Foot and ankle trauma

  • Sports injuries including cartilage and ligament injuries

  • Ankle arthritis

  • Sports injuries and arthritis of the knee, including knee arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction and knee replacement

In addition, Dr Png is the orthopaedic lead for Diabetic Limb Salvage Service which comprises a team of foot and ankle surgeons, plastic surgeons, interventional radiologists, podiatrists and specialty nurses. He focuses on the use of percutaneous minimal incision techniques in the treatment of diabetic foot conditions to minimise wound complications and maximise chances of limb preservation. The results of his team has led them to clinching the prestigious Singapore Health Quality Service Awards Best Team Award in 2023.

Beyond his clinical duties, Dr Png has a keen interest in clinical research and has published and presented his research in both local and international conferences and medical journals. He also continues to contribute to medical education and is involved in the teaching of future generations of doctors and surgeons in undergraduate as well as post graduate training programs.
