Pilocarpine is a medicine that increases saliva flow, and is used to treat dry mouth.

What side effects can Pilocarpine cause?

  • Sweating
    Ensure that you are receiving sufficient fluid intake.
  • Stomach upset
  • Runny nose, tearing of eyes
  • Flushing, chills
  • Dizziness, weakness
  • Frequent urination

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Side effects become severe
  • Anxiety and mood changes
  • Headache and vomiting
  • Eye pain or vision changes
  • Chest pain
  • Allergic reactions e.g. skin rash, swelling, breathing difficulties

Before taking Pilocarpine , what precautions must I follow?

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist regarding any other medical conditions you have e.g. closed-angle glaucoma or medicines that you are currently taking.

How should Pilocarpine be used?

It is a tablet that is taken by mouth, with a full glass of water. Follow your prescribed dose and do not take more than directed.

It may take up to 12 weeks of treatment to notice significant improvement in your dry mouth.

If you miss a dose of Pilocarpine, take it as soon as your remember. However, skip the dose if it is near the time for your next dose. Do not double dose.
