Levothyroxine - What is it for

Levothyroxine is a hormonal medicine usually used for the purpose of replacement or supplemental therapy in conditions of thyroid disorders.

What side effects can Levothyroxine cause?

Some of the common side effects that may occur are:

  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Sweating
  • Increased appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Insomnia

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Chest pain
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Excessive sweating
  • Seizures
  • Allergic reactions: rash or swelling or breathing difficulty

Before taking Levothyroxine , what precautions must I follow?

  • Inform your doctor of pharmacist if you:
    • Have any other medical conditions e.g heart problems, high blood pressure
    • Are on any other medicines e.g. warfarin

How should Levothyroxine be used?

It is a tablet that you take by mouth, usually as a single dose in the morning on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before the first food or beverage of the day. You may take it with half a glass of water. Supplements containing calcium or iron, antacids, milk or dairy products should be avoided within 2 to 4 hours of taking Levothyroxine. Try taking it at the same time every day to ensure that it always has the same effect. Do not discontinue or use different brands interchangeably without your doctor's knowledge.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Levothyroxine, take it as soon as you remember. However if it is near your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
