There appears to be an increasing number of people undergoing genetic tests as understanding of genetics grows. Launched in September 2020, the Genetic Services clinic at NNI offers genetic testing to patients and even family members. These tests determine if a patient’s condition was likely caused by a faulty gene, the likelihood of passing the gene on to their children and if healthy family members also carry the gene and are at risk of developing the disease. Dr Kaavya Narasimhalu, Consultant, Neurology and the programme lead at NNI @ Singapore General Hospital campus explained that neurologists and neurosurgeons may refer their patients to the NNI genetic services clinic if they suspect that their patient’s condition has a genetic link. Dr Chen Zhiyong, Consultant, Neurology and the programme lead at NNI @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital campus shared and explained various fertility options with patients who are considering reproduction based on risk of transmission of a disease trait to a child.
