Dr Bien Lai, Senior Consultant and Head, Paediatric Dentistry, Department of Restorative Dentistry, was interviewed by Mediacorp Channel 8 on the topic of childhood caries and the Infant Oral Health Programme (IOHP).
NDCS statistics show that one in every two children under the age of 6 develop childhood caries.
Dr Bien Lai shared on the importance of regular dentist visits, as opposed to only doing so when a dental problem arises and recommends the first dental visit by the age of one. Regular visits help with early detection and allows for the use of non-invasive treatments.
Under IOHP children at risk of developing childhood caries are referred to GDPs for preventive follow ups and/or treatments with a focus on modifying the child’s dietary habits and oral hygiene habits. More than 300 children have benefited from IOHP since its inception.
