Ever wondered how simple lunch breaks could turn into something so much more? The story of these lunch gatherings proves that a shared meal isn't just about food—it's about creating bonds that transform colleagues into a family.
It began over eight years ago, driven by a shared love for good food and good company. What started as a casual idea between a few colleagues soon blossomed into a beloved tradition. The initial goal was to enjoy a break from the daily grind, but it evolved into something far more meaningful.
Knowing the 'Kakis'
“Our #FamilyAtWork lunches bring together admin staff from five departments in the Division of Medicine at Academia. We work in different areas - Infectious Disease, Endocrinology, Renal, Neo-natal, and Gastroenterology - but at lunch, we're just one big family,” said Ivy. “Over the years, we've gotten to know each other's likes and dislikes really well. We remember who enjoys which drinks and what foods to skip for some folks. These meals have done more than fill our stomachs; they've helped us build strong #FamilyAtWork bonds across all our departments, turning colleagues into true 'kakis'.”

When did it become a #FamilyAtWork tradition?
The turning point came when colleagues began adding their own flair to the lunches—instead of just each bringing their own, they started suggesting dishes, themes, and fun ideas. It quickly became more than just a meal; it became an anticipated event. Soon, everyone was counting down to the next gathering, and lunch breaks officially earned the #FamilyAtWork title.
The Evolution of the gatherings
What began as a simple meal turned into a vibrant, collaborative feast over time. The lunches became more elaborate, with everyone contributing ideas and dishes that delighted taste buds. The atmosphere buzzed with laughter, stories, and even debates about the best comfort foods.
A unique tradition emerged during these gatherings. As they tossed their salads, the group would chant "Huat Huat Huat!" for good health, fortune, success, happiness, and even "BIG angpow"—not just during Chinese New Year's "Lo Hei", but throughout the year. This cheerful ritual added an extra layer of camaraderie and positive energy to their meals.
Most Memorable Dishes (Or the Ones Remembered!)
Choosing a single memorable dish is nearly impossible, as each meal brings something unique and delicious to the table. However, two dishes stand out as particular favourites:
Tuna sandwiches: An all-time favourite for everyone, these sandwiches are the ultimate comfort meal. Fast to prepare and always tasty, they've never grown boring despite countless variations. The group has experimented with different breads like ciabatta, focaccia, bagels, and croissants, keeping this simple dish exciting and fresh.
Bibimbap: This Korean dish represents one of the group's most successful culinary explorations. With its vibrant colours and varied vegetables, bibimbap is a feast for the eyes, as well as the palate. The joy of digging into this delicious meal brings smiles to everyone's faces, making lunch time a true celebration.
Every lunch is like an edible adventure, filled with flavours that make each gathering special. The meals are truly made with love, as the group often reminds each other of the importance of self-love and loving each other's company.
Healthy vs. comfort food: Which wins?
Comfort food often takes the spotlight. Balancing healthy options isn't a priority; instead, easy preparation and maximum enjoyment guide the choices. A warm bowl of noodles, a hearty stew, or a satisfying tuna sandwich simply hits the spot during a busy work day.
Adapting during busy times
Maintaining the tradition during busy work periods can be a challenge, but support from doctors and supervisors who respect the importance of lunch breaks helps keep it alive. These gatherings remain a priority, even when workloads increase.
Impromptu chill-out spots
There isn't a designated "lunch lounge." Instead, participants are flexible and find an available pantry or spot to settle in once the food is ready. It's less about the location and more about the camaraderie.
Moments that capture the #FamilyAtWork spirit
The #FamilyAtWork spirit shines in moments when colleagues support one another, whether it's helping prepare food, cleaning up, or offering a kind word. These lunches have demonstrated that workplace friendships can be much more than small talk by the coffee machine.
The impact on work relationships
These lunch gatherings have positively influenced team dynamics. They provided a chance to learn each other's quirks, preferences, and stories, making collaboration and support more natural. The lunches remind everyone that behind every email is a person who loves good food and connection.
What #FamilyAtWork represents
#FamilyAtWork is more than just a hashtag—it embodies building connections that go beyond work. These shared meals perfectly illustrate this concept, fostering authentic relationships, laughter, and genuine support. It's a reminder that work is better when surrounded by colleagues who feel like family.
The group's favourite word "LOVE" is often heard during these gatherings. It serves as a reminder to love oneself, appreciate each other's company, and spread love by helping one another during meal preparations or at work.
Supporting each other through tough times
Guests are welcome at these lunches, with other admin staff often joining in and strengthening the sense of community. Sharing a meal offers a moment of comfort during tough times and reinforces that no one is alone. The brief lunch chats often turn into encouragement sessions, and it's not uncommon for anyone to casually walk to a colleague's workstation any time for help or support.
The secret sauce for success
The key to maintaining the #FamilyAtWork lunch tradition is improvisation and an open mind. Trying new dishes and experimenting with flavours keeps the excitement alive and ensures that each gathering is eagerly anticipated. Whether it's exploring new ways to enjoy tuna sandwiches or diving into the colourful world of bibimbap, the group's culinary adventures never cease.
Starting a #FamilyAtWork tradition at any workplace can be simple and rewarding. It's not about perfection—it's about creating moments filled with laughter, connection, and good food. By taking that first step, a team can grow into a work family that makes the work day a little brighter. Start small, keep it fun, and watch as colleagues transform into a true #FamilyAtWork!
