Identification of Adherens Junctions and Beta-catenin as a Missing Link in Understanding Glucose’s Ability to Stimulate insulin Secretion:
Implications for Development of Type-2 Diabetes
Abstract
This presentation will focus on the diabetes research in the lab which has identified a new mechanism in which adherens junctions and related proteins play a key role in regulating insulin secretion in response to glucose and the movement of GLUT4 in response to insulin. This could provide a unifying explanation for the defects that contribute to the development of type-2 diabetes.
Biography
Peter’s research focuses on unravelling signalling mechanisms involved in cancer and diabetes. He received his PhD in New Zealand and after postdoctoral positions at Harvard Medical School and Cambridge University he joined the faculty at University College London and was appointed to a chair there. He returned to the University of Auckland to undertake a programme to develop PI 3-kinase inhibitors as anti-cancer agents. This advanced to phase-1 clinical trial and his interest in drug discovery has continued with advanced programmes targeting BRAF, VEGFR, drug resistant mutants of c-kit, CSF1R and Lck.
