Clinical Facilities

Imaging and Investigations suites

NCCS possess the state-of the-art facilities to conduct the following clinical investigations:

  1. General X-ray

  2. Computerised Tomography: uses computer and x-ray scanner to produce cross-sectional images of the body to detect location and extent of the cancer.

  3. CT Colonography: using the multi-slice CT to obtain high resolution and detailed images of the colon.

  4. Magnetic Resonance Imaging: uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the human body. A new procedure that harnesses this technology is the Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound that is used to treat early stage prostate cancer. The visual capabilities of MRI direct sound waves at the affected point to treat tumour cells that can be as small as half the size of a grain of rice.

  5. Mammography: is the most effective imaging tool to screen for breast cancer by producing low dose x-rays of the breast for comparisons.

  6. Ultrasound: uses high frequency sound waves to record images of various body parts such as thyroid, breasts, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and uterus and blood flow in arteries and veins.

  7. Mammotone Breast Biopsy: uses vacuum-assisted device under image guidance to remove tissue from the breast for microscopic examination.

  8. Biopsy: to obtain tissue sample from area of suspicious growth for histology.

  9. Endoscopy: examine the colon and stomach through a thin flexible tube.

Chemotherapy suites

Chemotherapy is one of the available treatments for cancer. At NCCS, two chemotherapy suites are housed as part of the Ambulatory Treatment Unit, which has a capacity to administer treatments to 54 patients at any one time. Each treatment station is equipped with a television set to keep patients entertained during their treatment.  The suites administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy.

Radiation Therapy suites

As the largest radiation therapy facility in Singapore, our equipment is the most advanced and fitted with the most effective technology to administer radiation treatment to cancer patients. Sited at SGH and NCCS, these equipment delivers external beam radiation, brachytherapy, intensity modulated radiation, Image-guided radiation, radiosurgery and tomotherapy.

Operating Theatre

The theatre is well equipped to perform surgical procedures such as breast excision, breast biopsy, mastectomy, breast hook wire localisation, thyroidectomy, parotidectomy, pan endoscopy and cervical lymph nodes biopsy among many others.
