| The Epidemiology Unit is a newly established research unit under the Division of Clinical Trials and Epidemiology (CTE), National Cancer Centre, Singapore. It was formerly part of the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Unit, and have since grown and developed into a sub-specialty of its own, catering to support research conducted within and outside of NCC.
Newly established in 2009, the epidemiology unit aims to tap on evidence-based medicine techniques to study the risk factors and disease patterns for cancer. By intensively studying and gathering such information, epidemiology helps to define and evaluate intervention strategies, which may or may not already be in place.
Through collaboration with many researchers around the region, our group is able to build strong connections and tap on their expertise to further support research activities, and promote advances in cancer research within NCC and Singapore.
The epidemiology unit is currently involved in a number of international and local projects. One of our major projects involves collaborating with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This is an international multi-centred project that broadly aims to identify genes that are involved in the aetiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, diagnosed patients, their family members, as well as healthy volunteers are actively being recruited to provide valuable clinical and demographic information, together with biological samples.
Our unit offers consultations to all researchers within NCC, assisting in the designing of the most feasible study to answer a focused research question.
