The Need for Research
Cancer accounts for approximately 26 per cent of all deaths in Singapore, making
it the country’s top killer disease. Today, these figures would have increased if not for the efforts of the National Cancer Centre Singapore and other agencies in successfully gaining an upper hand in tackling the disease. Apart from creating a greater awareness through public education, the medical specialists have been successful in treating and curing more people through medical advances. A better understanding of the disease has also enabled them to recognize the signs and symptoms for earlier, more effective and more accurate diagnosis. Very often it is the early detection that saves lives.
NCCS through the Humphrey Oei Insitutute of Cancer Research has chosen to focus on its research strategy to bring hope to our society. Our oncologists interact closely with our scientists with the expectation that discoveries from the bench can be rapidly applied to the bedside, and also clinical problems and insights can be scientifically investigated. In its quest to achieve world-class research, HOICR has collaborated with reputable overseas institutions for a two-way exchange of know-how. Its research efforts have also been acclaimed by the medical fraternity overseas.
