1. CANCERWISE WORKSHOPS

a. CancerWise Workshop on Liver, Stomach and Colorectal Cancers

This workshop is designed to empower healthy individuals with the ability to recognise suspicious signs and symptoms, identify risk factors and take measures to detect and prevent cancer.

Date: 17 July 2004 (Saturday)
Time: 1pm to 5pm (registration is from 12.30pm to 1pm)

b. CancerWise Women Workshop
This comprehensive workshop addresses concerns about female cancers e.g. breast and cervix. Learn from cancer experts how to reduce risks and what to do when you have suspicious signs and symptoms.

Time: 1pm to 5pm (registration is from 12.30pm to 1pm)

Registration is now opened for both workshops. Seats are reserved first-come-first-served and are limited to a small number to allow participants more interaction with the specialists.

Fees: $10 per participant per workshop (inclusive of GST, workshop kit and light refreshment). Special corporate and staff rates are available. Please call to enquire.

2. SUPPORT GROUP PROGRAMS – NCC’s Holistic Approach to Cancer Care

These programs provide patients and their caregivers an opportunity to relate with others in similar situations, learn coping skills, build friendship, share experiences, reflect and grow. Sessions are led by Medical Social Workers experienced in these fields.
a. My Journey Through Cancer Begins

Date: 19 Jun (Sat) & 27 August (Fri)
Closing date for registration: 17 Jun (Thurs) & 25 Aug (Thurs)

For patients with newly diagnosed cancers to share their personal experiences with their illness. This group session is most appropriate for patients who to find solace in relating with other cancer patients - making choices about treatment and discuss treatment-related concerns, personal and family dilemmas, lifestyle changes, the kinds of support needed, commitment and motivational factors that would help one to move on with life.

b. Breaking the Silence

Date: 25 Jun (Fri)
Closing date for registration: 23 Jun (Wed)

Patients and their loved ones sometimes protect each other from knowing the truth about the illness. For some, their difficulties lie in not knowing what to say nor who to say it to. Breaking the silence also concerns patients who have kept secrets revolving around hurt, anger and despair, about expectations, about the fear of suffering, and about living.

c. When Caring Doesn’t Help Anymore
(For Care-givers & Family Members)

Caring can appear to be controlling to some patients. For some others, no amount of care is enough. What does caring entail? Find out from other caregivers their own experiences of caring for someone with cancer.

d. Rediscovering Resources Within

Date: 23 Jul (Fri)
Closing date for registration: 21 (Wed)

This is a group for self-rediscovery of one’s inner strengths that are often lost when illness strikes. It is about regaining energies and strengths that worked. It is about finding one’s resilience in the midst of uncertainties.

e. What Is This Feeling?

Date: 21 Aug (Sat)
Closing date for registration: 19 Aug (Thurs)

Feelings of anxiety, fears, grief and anger may stay with you without you being aware. Some patients have longer periods of low or depressive moods. This group session explores these common feelings and look at how others are dealing with them.

4. HEALTHY FOOD TRAIL
Organised by the Health Promotion Board

A half a day tour around Singapore takes you to hawker centres to savour tasty, healthier food and lunch at a Chinese restaurant that serves healthier dishes. Learn from our nutritionist how to shop smart. A visit to the supermarket completes the tour.

Fees: $15 per participant (inclusive of lunch)
Time: 9am to 2pm
