Editor's Note

Is cancer becoming more common? Having heard recently that a friend's relative was diagnosed with cancer, the frightening prospect that one might be afflicted with cancer is beginning to surface. Before panicking, you might want to read our article on the epidemiology of cancer in Singapore and the world, with objective data from the Singapore Cancer Registry and other reputable sources. It is important to remember that cancer is a disease of cell dysregulation and it affects mainly older persons. The reason we are seeing more cancers is because we have an aging population in Singapore.

Nonetheless, there are occasions when cancer does affect younger persons and the National Cancer Centre is starting “Nip” (Neoplasm Interception Program) that a person could consider for a more personal discussion of cancer risk. For the general population, some of the cancers to consider screening are covered in our Can-Help tips. Screening is checking people without symptoms for a disease. Of course no test is foolproof, and it should be remembered that any worrying symptoms or lumps that you have would be best discussed with your doctor.

Our EnReach residential program continues its successful run for cancer patients and their family. We show you some highlights of our recent retreat with our special thanks to participants, sponsors and volunteers.

As we near the end of the year, we would like to wish our readers a great holiday season from the Can-Help team and do keep healthy!.
