1. CANCERWISE WORKSHOPS

a. CancerWise Women

A comprehensive workshop that addresses concerns about female cancers such as breast and cervical cancers. Learn from NCC’s cancer specialists how to reduce your risks and what to do when you have suspicious signs and symptoms.

Date: 19 Mar 2005 (Saturday)
Time: 1pm to 5pm (registration is from 12.30pm to 1pm)

Seats are reserved first-come-first-served and are limited to a small number to allow participants more interaction with the specialists.

Fees: $10 per participant per workshop (inclusive of GST, workshop kit and light refreshment). Special corporate and staff rates are available.

2. SUPPORT GROUP PROGRAMS – (English)

Admission is Free
These programs provide patients and their caregivers an opportunity to relate with others in similar situations, learn coping skills, build friendship, share experiences, reflect and grow. Sessions are led by Medical Social Workers experienced in these fields.
a. My Journey Through Cancer Begins

Date: 18 Dec (Sat)
Time: 2pm to 4pm
Closing date for registration: 16 Dec (Thurs)

For patients with newly diagnosed cancers to share their personal experiences with their illness. This group session is most appropriate for patients who to find solace in relating with other cancer patients - making choices about treatment and discuss treatment-related concerns, personal and family dilemmas, lifestyle changes, the kinds of support needed, commitment and motivational factors that would help one to move on with life.

b. Breaking the Silence

Date: 7 Jan 2005 (Fri)
Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm
Closing date for registration: 5 Jan 2005 (Wed)

Patients and their loved ones sometimes protect each other from knowing the truth about the illness. For some, their difficulties lie in not knowing what to say nor who to say it to. Breaking the silence also concerns patients who have kept secrets revolving around hurt, anger and despair, about expectations, about the fear of suffering, and about living.

c. When Caring Doesn’t Help Anymore
(For Care-givers & Family Members)

Date: 4 Feb 2005 (Fri)
Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm
Closing date for registration: 2 Feb 2005 (Wed)

Caring can appear to be controlling to some patients. For some others, no amount of care is enough. What does caring entail? Find out from other caregivers their own experiences of caring for someone with cancer.

d. Rediscovering Resources Within

Date: 16 Mar 2005 (Fri)
Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

This is a group for self-rediscovery of one’s inner strengths that are often lost when illness strikes. It is about regaining energies and strengths that worked. It is about finding one’s resilience in the midst of uncertainties.

b. What Is This Feeling

Feelings of anxiety, fears, grief and anger may stay with you without you being aware. Some patients have longer periods of low or depressive moods. This group session explores these common feelings and look at how others are dealing with them.

4. SUPPORT THROUGH EMPOWERMENT, ENRICHMENT & RESOURCEFULNESS (STEER)

This comprehensive 1 year programme offers organized activities to guide patients and families through healthy living and building resilience in coping with cancer. The STEER Programme runs on the 1 st Saturday of the month.
