LIFE BEYOND CANCER THERAPY: GETTING BACK TO NORMAL
Thanks
to recent advances in science and development of improved therapies
more and more cancer survivors are living beyond their disease –
enjoying a full life after treatment. At NCC we are not only committed
to provide the state of art cancer-treatment but along with our
team of professionals at the Outram campus, we strive to allow our
cancer survivors lead a productive, healthy life after their cancer
experience.
Maintaining
physical and emotional health can be a challenge in the period after
the diagnosis & therapy of cancer because of unique and long-lasting
health needs that are created by the intensive and complex treatments
that are often needed to combat this disease. Surgery may cause
physical limitations depending of the location of the resected tumor,
or swelling of an extremity from blockage of the lymphatic drainage
or loss of a limb or voice. Radiotherapy may create abnormalities
such as mouth sores, skin breakdown, contractures or decreased function
of certain glands by its effect on the normal organs in radiation
field. Chemotherapy may have specific residual changes in either
nerves or hearing. When a combination of treatment is used to treat
the cancer the possible side effects may be compounded and generalized
debility may require patient to undergo rehabilitation. While the
oncologists pay attention to cancer specific late effects and surveillance
needs for detecting recurrence or a consequential health condition;
the versatile team of rehabilitation physicians, social workers,
pharmacists, physical, occupational and speech therapists guide
the patients to near normalcy and best efficiency in the patient’s
quest to enjoy their triumph over cancer.
