Breathe Easy With Lung Thoracic Care Nurse Support
Senior Staff Nurse Tan Beng Le
Thoracic Care Nurse, NCC
Lung cancer is the most common cause of death in Singaporean men & the third most common cancer in women. A diagnosis of lung cancer can be overwhelming – it creates in depth physical and emotional changes in a person’s life. Furthermore, the accompanying cancer treatment often results in feelings of anger, blame, sadness, guilt and fear.
As part of our commitment to care for the community and provide excellent care, a nurse specialist with an in-depth understanding of the disease process, available treatments and support programmes is assigned to be the Lung Thoracic Care Nurse. She serves as an invaluable resource and advocate for all lung cancer patients.
The Lung Thoracic Care Nurse works closely with the oncologists to provide direct holistic patient care for lung cancer patients. She also provides education and counselling to patients and their families on various issues and problems related to lung cancer and its treatments. She also provides advice and guidance to both nurses and other healthcare professionals on specific patient care issues and treatment plans related to lung cancer.
In order to enhance continuity of care for cancer patients at the National Cancer Centre, the Lung Thoracic Care Nurse works in collaboration with other healthcare professionals at inpatient and community settings. In line with this, she functions as the resource person for the Mandarin Support Group and the lung cancer workshop for patients and caregivers which is coming up later in the year.
