Many cancer patients are concerned about their diet, physical activity, lifestyle and image after cancer treatments. The well being of each cancer survivor may depend on many factors. Below are some recommendations on lifestyle habits:

Area of concern Examples Remarks
Lifestyle Smoking
Quit habit
Alcohol Avoid or limit intake
Physical activity General population Start exercise at low intensity and slowly but gradually raise it to the level that your body can handle.
Special population
- Low immunity

- After radiotherapy

Avoid exercising at crowded, public places.

Avoid swimming pools as chlorine in the water may irritate the skin.
Diet

Food
- Fats

- Fiber

- Proteins

- Carbohydrates

Supplement
- Antioxidant(e.g. vitamin A, C and E)

Although fat intake does not appear to have direct effect on cancer, high fat intake may cause obesity that increases cancer and recurrence risks. Recommend moderate intake of fats.

There is little link between fiber and cancer. However, fiber may help to relieve constipation that is frequently associated with cancer treatments. In general, fiber is beneficial for health. So foods that are rich in fiber, such as vegetables and fruits are recommended.

Proteins are essential for growth of new body cells, fighting infections and building of body tissues. Therefore, foods that are rich in proteins such as fish, meat and egg are recommended.

Large intake of carbohydrates can also lead to obesity. But, carbohydrates are necessary in our daily diet to provide us with the energy to function. Thus, take only a moderate amount of carbohydrate in your daily diet.

Although antioxidants are said to prevent damage to body cells caused by chemicals, this effect is not clinically proven in cancer patients.
Emotion Low Self-esteem Cancer survivors may experience low self-esteem as a result of side effects of their cancer treatments such as hair- loss, scarring from surgical procedures and radiotherapy.

- Hair Loss Management
Hair loss due to cancer treatment is usually reversible. Visible hair growth will usually be seen 2 to 3 months after cessation of treatment. In the mean time, the use of wig, scarf or hat is recommended. The use of mild shampoo is advisable.

- Surgical scar
Products such as Centellase, Dermatix and Mederma are available in the market that may help to soothe scars. Creams that contain hydroquinone may lighten any pigmented areas.
