Is it difficult to pick up an exercise program? What motivates you to sweat it out ?

My good friend, a family doctor, is doing his first full Ironman triathlon event this month. That means a 3.8km swim in the open sea, 180 km on a bicycle and a 42 km run. I have always wondered how he found the time to prepare, as a family doctor with 2 children, he puts in long hours at work. Another inspiration of mine is the dragon boat team from Breast Cancer Foundation who are breast cancer survivors. They show not only physical ability but strength of character as well.

Exercise can be a great tonic – for cancer patients, cancer survivors and ordinary people. Some patients after undergoing chemotherapy complain of fatigue. Sometimes, this is due to de-conditioning rather than side effects. Many patients who keep active with suitable exercises breeze through chemotherapy treatment. Hence, discussing what activities might be suitable is important for patients. We have invited a few specialists to shed light on these topics. Of course discussing with your own doctor if you have a medical condition is still important.

We certainly realise the value of a good workout, but for many who have difficulty getting started, we hope this issue on exercise will remind you to GET UP AND GO!
