Fighting Fatigue

Fatigue is one of the most common complaints of people with cancer and is also experienced by some cancer survivors. It is a condition marked by extreme tiredness and inability to function due to lack of energy. Cancer survivors have identified fatigue as a major hurdle to normal functioning and good quality of life. Fatigue can occur for many reasons – as a result of previous cancer treatment, physical, emotional, social factors, etc.

If you have problems with fatigue, speak with your healthcare provider. Below is a list of strategies that could be helpful to you to fight fatigue.

Strategies Examples Remarks
Conserve energy
  • Set priorities
  • Schedule activities at times when you know you have more energy
  • Use labour-saving devices
  • Postpone doing activities that are less important
Ask your family or friends to help with tasks.
Distraction Listening to music, reading, socializing Distraction prevents you from thinking about fatigue.
Activity enhancement
  • Exercise (e.g. walking, cycling, swimming, yoga)
Exercise should be individualized and started gradually. Regular exercise can improve and increase appetite.
Restorative therapy
  • Involve in natural environment activities (e.g. walk in park or along the beach)
Helps the body and mind to relax.
Nutrition
  • Ensure a balanced and healthy diet
 
Sleep therapy
  • Sleep hygiene
Fixed bedtimes and waking-up times.
Family interaction
  • Talk to the family, let them understand your feelings
Family support is important.
Psychosocial interventions
  • Manage stress
  • Learn relaxation methods
  • Attend support groups
 
Use of medications
  • Psycho stimulants
  • Antidepressants
Some patients may need medication to help reduce fatigue. Consult your doctor.
