Hello Everyone,

I’m Karen Hong. Yes, I’m a cancer patient. In Sept. 2005, I was diagnosed with terminal stage Lung Cancer. I’m just 32 years old.

My world nearly collapsed when the doctor first told me about my condition. It started from Lung Cancer and subsequently spread to the Brain! We were all puzzled by the news. I’m a homemaker, looking after my then 2 yr old daughter. I’m basically stress-free. There’s nothing wrong with my life style too. I am not a smoker and no one at home smokes. I have no symptoms. No cough, no pain.

So, Why? How Come?

Life is so unpredictable. I’ve now come to terms with what has happened. I’m glad to have this opportunity to remind you about the importance of doing regular health checks and encourage you to do so.

I am a good example. My problem was discovered during a health check. Like what I mentioned earlier, I had no symptoms even though I already have the illness. I was only alerted because of the high tumor marker reading from the blood test.

Love and support is really what we need. I am very blessed to have so many people care so much for me. My spiritual belief helps me to see life differently and I draw strength from it. I do not feel awkward with telling people about my illness. Instead of people encouraging me, I became their encourager. Being sick is not our choice, but we can choose the kind of life after that. Whether we want to be happy or continue to sulk. The road to recovery is full of Ups and Downs, but giving up is not in my agenda.

I will remember what my daughter told me when she first saw my bald head as result of Radiation Therapy. She said, “Mama you look nice”. I was really touched. At first I was very concerned she may not be able to accept my new look. Although I know what she said may not be true but those innocent, kind words made my day. I realized in her little heart, I’m so beautiful and important. These simple words have encouraged me not to give up. I’m sure all you parents will understand how I feel.

Today, I’m living not only for myself but for my loved ones too. So friends, let us not take our health for granted, early detection saves lives.

God Bless You!
