Dear Dr Chan

On behalf of my family I would like to thank you for taking the time to counsel me regarding giving the comfort to my sister Aileen. Without talking to you we would not have understood and accepted the medication to help lessen her suffering.

We thank the nursing staff for the assistance to us while giving Aileen the care and comfort she needed during the last stage of the illness which caused her so much pain. We thank SN Parvathi for arranging the private room and talking to us whenever she came. Can you let her know as I do not have her e-mail. We also want to thank the (stoma) nurse who changed the stoma bag for Aileen unfortunately I have forgotten her name. She took the time to explain to me why the morphin would help when cleaning her stoma bag. My brother who stayed the night told us the night nurses on the 8 th January were very caring in handling Aileen's final stage when phlegm was developing in her throat.

So from all of us, our appreciation. Best regards to you all.

Family of the late Aileen Fun

Dear Prof Soo,

We would like to express our thanks and gratefulness for performing the operation for my mum (Madam Tan). My mum especially, wishes to thank you for all the kind and tender care/treatment that you have given her for the past ten years+ ever since she contacted cancer. She always tells us how much she is indebted to you.

We understand that the lump which was extracted from her lung is diagnosed as cancerous and that further tests are required to determine if the entire cancerous area has been removed. We also understand that future treatment may require another lung operation. However we feel comforted that should that be required. We have one of the best cancer doctor attending to my mum.

One side note, I personally wish that there is a way that I can express my heartfelt gratitude for saving my mum's life ten years ago. I was studying in the states and having my exams at the time of the operation.

I know that you have a very busy schedule and I shun take up anymore of your precious time. Once again, thank you.

Best Regards,
John Ng

Dear All,

I wish to commend Dr V.K. Sethi & Dr Ho Gay Hui for their excellent service of care & concern for me, a patient struck by cancer twice.

In 1990 I had hysterectomy done & received radiotherapy treatment for 5 weeks I still remember (??) Dr Sethi's assuring & comforting words to allay all my fears. All through these 13 years, he had been a wonderful doctor looking after me not only with his medical expertise but also with a human & godly touch.

Recently on June 3, 2003, I had mastertomy done by Dr Ho Gay Hui who had to handle a patient struck by cancer the second time. Her professional skill coupled with her understanding, care & concern goes a long way in the healing process for me.

A mere thank you is never sufficient in my case. I hope you can competently convey my heartfelt thanks & appreciation to both my doctors for all they have done.

Thank You
Janet Lim

Dear Professor Soo,

Notes of appreciation

My late husband, Jeremy M. was a patient of SGH/NCC.

He was well taken care of by all staff of SGH/NCC in particular, they follow 3 staff members of NCC who deserve the commendation for their excellent service and attention to patients.

  • Dr Koo Wen Hsin, Senior Consultant, Department of Medical Oncology
  • Dr Cynthia Goh, head of Department of Pallative Medicine
  • Mr Gilbert Fan, Manager, Medical Social Services

Enclosed are our Notes of Appreciation and I would appreciate it if you could help to extend it to them individually.

Congratulations Professor Soo! I believe NCC will be equally proud of them as we do.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr Goh,

I would like to thank you for your great kindness and care in looking after John in his last few months of life. I am so grateful that he had little pain or nausea towards the end.

John and I were very thankful that you placed us under The Wing of The Assisi Home and Hospice, and arranged his brief hospital admission for investigations.

Thanks to the kind and caring support of Dr Grace Pang, Dr Tan Hui-Hui, and Nurse Andes Poh, it was possible to nurse him at home until the end, with the help of Emma, William and Robert, our children.

John dies on the morning of Thursday, March 27 th 2003, and his funeral was held at St. Andrew's Cathedral on Monday, March 30th.

Thanks again to you, and your team, and also to Dr Terence Tan and Dr Khoo Kei Siong for looking after John.

With Kindest regards,
Jeanette Houston

Dear sir,

This letter is really long overdue. I have wanted to write this letter for a long time but somehow for some reasons this simple task seems to escape me. This time, this letter needs to get your attention. Please let me explain.

My name is Seah Mei Ling and I have been a Ca Breast patient of Dr Khoo Kei Siong for a couple of years already. In all these years, I must confess that the treatment and the care that I have received in NCC, is second to none. This face clearly underscores the way in which the NCC, in general and the Dept of Medical Oncology, in particular, is run. And I am quite sure, Prof Soo, you are aware who is the Head of the aforesaid Dept.

It is indeed fortunate that Dr K S Khoo is the doctor who is taking care of me. There are only superlatives in describing Dr K S Khoo, nothing less! And with doctors like him around, is it any wonder that one of the aims of NCC which is the commitment to excellence in research, education and clinical services and the provision of the highest standards of medical diagnosis, treatment and patient care, is indeed of relevance here.

For a start, Dr Khoo is no ordinary doctor. He goes the extra mile. He makes you feel at ease. He knows what he is talking about. He speaks extremely well, his diction is fluent and clear and he has a fantastic command of the English language and above all, he makes you understand what you need and want to understand. From the ever changing drugs and the corresponding treatments that I am given, Dr Khoo makes it extremely clear as what each specific drug is for and the mechanism in which it works, in plain layman's language, a task which is not as easy as it looks. But Dr Khoo is able to do it with relative ease that it appears so naturally to him.

Dr Khoo's presence is very reassuring. He is very composed, calm, steady and exudes confidence. The way he carries himself, the firm handshake, the comforting and kind smile all adds to the trust I have for Dr Khoo as my doctor. He is always impeccably dressed and well-groomed. Dr Khoo brings cheer and sunshine to patients like myself by his enthusiasm, sincerity and confidence as a doctor and as a person. He is an extremely warm person to speak to and a good listener as well. And he listens and listens intently to what you have to say. His answers to questions raised during consultations are accurate, to the point and very helpful indeed. It is quite clear to my husband, who incidentally always accompanies me to the clinic, when he commented that Dr Khoo is not only and outstanding clinical consultant but is very up-to-date in terms of reading research papers. You see, my husband himself is a science man and he is extremely impressed by the way Dr Khoo conducts himself professionally and as a person who really cares.

Dear Dr Khoo,

RE: Letter of commendation - ward 73 Doctors

We wish to thank the following doctors for their care and concern during our late daughter, Ying Ying's stay at Ward 73, the day she passed away. The doctors are:

Dr Frank Chai Shyh Jye (MO)
Dr Wong Nan Soon
Dr Reuben Wong

Dr Chai Shyh Jye did everything he could, while he was in charge of the case initially, to give our daughter the best care and he did not leave any stones unturned in reviewing her condition. He was concerned about relieving her discomfort and went to great lengths to explain the seriousness of her situation and the recommended course of action.

Dr Wong Nan Soon spent a great deal of time explaining the situation to us on a number of occasions and demonstrated such patience and concern. He was cautious in his approach, yet was knowledgeable and understanding.

Dr Reuben Wong was so compassionate and kind and personally went out of his way to arrange for our daughter's cope-loop procedure. His tireless attempts to locate a vein for the IV so as to ensure minimal discomfort to our daughter touched our hearts. Similarly his caring advice to us when he saw the difficult she was in, during the last few hours prior to her passing, reflected his genuine concern and empathy with the patient's family.

All three doctors are outstanding in their profession and possessed qualities which are rare, especially in this particular discipline, where a patient can sometimes be viewed merely as a number. Though our daughter has gone home to be with the Lord, we are glad that in the last days of her life, she received the best possible care as she was under the wings of these three dedicated medical professionals.

We hope that in expressing our heartfelt appreciation, the Hospital will strongly commend them for their excellent service, professionalism and dedication and for upholding the spirit of true compassion so vital, yet so often overlooked in total medical care. Please convey our heartfelt thanks to them.

2 Timothy 4:7

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race

I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown

Of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will

Award to me on that day..."

Yours faithfully,
Family of the late
Chia Ying Ying

Dear Prof Ong,

My mum, Mdm Leong Swee Sin, was warded in SGH Ward 73 Room 2 from December 26,2001 to Jan 9, 2002. Being her children, we were all very confused and frightened to know that her days are numbered after reoccurrence of the malignant tumor.

As no one can play the role of 'God', we could only spend quality time with her during this period. The anxiety, tiredness, confusion and pain experienced by my family were just too great. With everyone's blessing, we brought her home yesterday.

We must write to you to say how much we appreciate the quality care, concern, comfort and time given to us your team:-

  1. Dr Tay Miah Hiang, Registrar (NCC)
  2. Dr Noreen Chan, Associate Consultant (Palliative Medicine)
  3. Dr Koo Wen Hsien, Senior Consultant (NCC) and
  4. The whole team of nurses in Ward 73

Even my mum, who is seriously ill, commented on the warmness and professional care displayed by the above. It has definitely changed the mindset, which we have of SGH.

We realize the value of time to a busy person like Dr Tay Miah Hiang and this makes us all the more appreciative of the time he has so generously given to my mum even on his day off. The professionalism, attentiveness and patience displayed by Dr Tay made my mum extremely happy to see him daily. It not only gave her comfort but also great confidence.

It is very gratifying to know that during this difficult period of time, such quality services were extended to our family in Singapore General Hospital. Please convey our appreciation and thanks to your team.

Yours faithfully

Dear Sir/Mdm

I Mdm Peck is an ovarian cancer survivor for 5 years, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to NCC, Senior Staff Nurse, Ms Tan Tiew Yah.

Over the period of time, she has been a beacon of hope and courage to me. She is a nurse with a selflessness dedication to providing good services to me. She is a nurse that is full of compassion and had showered me with much love and warmth. Till now, she cares and shows concern for my well-being. I am very touched by her integrity and strong morale support.

I hope that senior Staff Nurse Tan Tiew Yah mentioned above will be able to receive a form of appreciation from the board of NCC for her unreserved contribution to all her patients. I believe that such a reward will greatly boost her morale and self-esteem on the job. As a caregiver, she deserves to be recognized and commended.

I am indeed grateful to her unreserved contribution, continuous support commitment towards the Gynecologic Oncology Patient's Self Help Group for the past 4 years. I believe that with the self-help group, I will be able to cope better and survive significantly longer than those who had received only the standard care.

Once again I would like to thank you, NCC, for your kind attention by reading my letter.

Thank you,

Yours Sincerely
Mdm Doris Peck

Dear Prof Kon,

I take this opportunity to thank you kindly for your kindly for your excellent patient care and professional skills in conducting the various biochemistry tests. I have learned much from you lucid explanation in understanding the various issues and a better care in managing diabetes.

I have since had a operation on a spinal tumour which was operated on by a Dr Alvin Hong. It was a success and the tumour was benign. Also my diabetes medication is now reduced by half its dosage and under control.

Thank you for your excellent care and patience in explaining technical issues to a layman.

Dear Sir,

Letter of appreciation

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to your surgeon, Dr Koong Heng Nung, for his professional care and attention during my recent stay in SGH. Dr Koong has gone beyond his call of duty to attend to me. He made frequent trips to the hospital (including late nights and weekends) to check my condition. Dr Koong is also sensitive to my needs and requests, and has made special arrangement to make me feel comfortable. He has answered my queries adequately and provided me with valuable advice. Dr Koong has proved to be a responsible and professional doctor and he has made my stay in SGH a very pleasant one.

I am also thankful to NCC for assigning such an excellent doctor to take charge of my case. Best wishes and regards,

Yours faithfully,
Ms Janet Sim

Dear Dr Goh

I am the daughter of Mrs. Yasmin Pereira, an ex-patient of yours.

I understand that Nurse Soh Siew Khim has already informed you about my mother's demise on 16 July. I am writing this to thank you very much for the wonderful care tendered to my mother during his illness. I wanted to thank you personally and tried calling you twice, unfortunately you were not available, so I had to request Nurse Siew Khim to convey the news to you.

My family and I are very grateful to you for making my mother comfortable throughout her illness. The way you attended to her during consultations and the care you took to establish a suitable medication regime played a big part in her not having to suffer much pain, considering the seriousness of her problem. My mother always came away from your consultations feeling good and used to feel comforted under your care. I am glad to say that she had a peaceful end, but it is a loss that will take a long time to heal.

I would also like to place on record our appreciation to the doctors and nurses at the Hospice Care Association for their attendance on my mother. I must say nurses Sheila and Siew Khim are such shining examples of their profession. Thank you very much for putting us in touch with them.

I am sorry that it took me a month to write this to you, but I have been having a difficult time dealing with the loss.

Once again Dr. Goh, my family and I thank you very much.

Regards,
Joan Pereira

Dear Sir,

My family and I would like to place on record our deepest gratitude to and high regard for Dr Khoo Tan Hoon Seng, Consultant, Department of Therapeutic Radiology, NCC and Dr Loo Chian Min, Consultant Physician, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, SGH, for their care, professionalism and treatment rendered to Patrick. Our family is consoled by their good deeds and kindness for which SGH and NCC should be very proud of.

Dr Khoo Tan touches our lives by his spirit and humanity. Dr Khoo Tan took the trouble and time to plough through his voluminous medical records and summarized Patrick's medical history in a nutshell for reference and admission to SGH on 7.6.2002. Throughout Patrick's stay at SGH from 7.6.2002 to 29.6.2002, Dr Khoo Tan visited him regularly to review his case and progress. He worked in close collaboration with Dr Loo and mapped out the treatment strategy of steroid administration, taking pains to explain to us the cause, the methodology of this treatment and its anticipated results.

Dr Loo commanded our confidence as he showed a genuine interest in caring for his patient. He was a good listener and I was able to address my concerns, big and small, through him because of the effective doctor-patient/relatives rapport. He and Dr Khoo Tan stayed till the end and gave their all in terms of medical, emotional and humanitarian support.

My family and I are deeply moved by Dr Khoo Tan and Dr Loo; and by these exceptional men and women who excel in their jobs, who embody the ideals of their respective professions and who showcase quality standards SGH strives to achieve.

We seek your approval for us to present to each of them a Singapore Mint coin in recognition of their excellent service. We would be grateful if you could grant them approval to keep the coins which are enclosed.

Thank you,

Yours sincerely
Mdm Sim Hui Ying

Dear Sir,

Compliments to Dr Agasthian

In late august, I was diagnose with Lung cancer. Having going through two doctors, I was finally referred to Dr. Agasthian in early September.

I went to see him together with my wife who is four months pregnant. I do not know what to do and felt very helpless especially at this stage.

He guided me on my finances problems and gave me relevant advices and sincerely shown great concern over my wife and myself. This gave me strength and confident to through the operation. I thank god and my doctor "Dr. Agasthian" who had made this operation successful.

I would like to thank Dr. Agasthian. He is a good and kind doctor. He had help me in one way or another and he had given me a new life and I look forward to my new life.

I would like to commend Nurse Ms How Gek Noi on her most efficient handling of her cases in particular her attention to my daughter.

My daughter has been through as lot the last 2 ½ years having oral cancer. An ordeal culminating in the loss of her tongue. She is now very good and is on soft diet of porridge and milk everyday. Thank You all.

Throughout this period, one particular staff, Nurse Ms How stands out. She can remember so many of her patients one of whom is my mother. Today, we saw the patient, kind and friendly Prof. (The notable Professor Soo Khee Chee himself) within 15 minutes of our getting back to the Center but at times, when there is a queue, Nurse How will be back frequently to update us on our wait state. She has a good rapport with all her patients. She takes great care of my mother and sometimes funny to say which puts my mother in good humor for the rest of the day and that we appreciate very much.

Being a frontliner myself, I can imagine how difficult it must be to be dealing with sick people especially some of whom have such demanding personalities.

So crudoes to Ms How and keep it up.

Ms Tan Tai Ling

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to congratulate you for having an excellent pool of staff working with you.

What is even more noteworthy was my experience with staff nurse Gina How. After my wife Amanda had completed her radiotherapy treatment, Gina told us that if we need further help, we could call on her. I have to admit that I was then quite doubtful about what she told us. However, after my several occasions in reaching her for help, she had never failed us.

Gina's dedication and commitment to patients and to her job is commendable, and what impressed me most is perhaps, her spontaneity and sincere willingness in extending help to us. Given the cancer condition of my wife, have it not been her help., support and assurance, life for me would have been much less easier to cope.

A remarkable lady who is always so kind, understanding, even so genuine in providing care and concern to patients and their spouses, she deserves much recognition for her uniting effort in building on the good reputation of our National Health Care Services. Please convey my sincere appreciations to Gina, for a job well done.

Thank You & Warmest regards,

Yours faithfully

Dear Ms Ng

On behalf of my sister-in-law, Jessie, a cancer patient who has just passed away on 26-12-02, to express our appreciation and wish to thank all the doctors and nurses whom had attended to her since May 2001.

Since May 2001, my sister-in-law became a cancer patient in her terminal stage at NCC. Doctors and nurses have shown great concern, care, kind support and encouragement to her.

I would like to specially say "Thank You" to Dr Tan Eng Huat and Clinical Co-Ordinator, Miss Linda Koh, for their past concern, support, care and encouragement given to my sister-in-law.

Without their constant care and support, my sister-in-law would not have pull through for the past twenty months.

Without them, my sister-in-law would not have celebrated her last Christmas with us. Words cannot express our thanks to them.

Kindly relate my message to all the doctors and nurses especially to Dr Tan Eng Huat and Miss Linda Koh that we will always remember their kindnest. May God always bless them.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone at NCC a "Happy and Prosperous New Year".

To Foreign Patient Service Department
National Cancer Centre Singapore

I’m writing to thank you for the assistance given when my mother Ms Lan who has tongue cancer came to the NCCS for consultations and examinations from 24/01/2007 to 02/02/2007, with special thanks to Ms Wang Shufen.

To be away from home when being ill for a lengthy period would be difficult for my mother, so initially our family was very concerned about how efficient we could be during our visit to the NCCS. Thankfully, we got all the support needed from Ms Wang Shufen. She has gone all her way out to help us organize and arrange appointments in an efficient way, which was beyond our expectation. More importantly, she gave my mother valuable moral support during the time we were there.

My mother’s cancer is a significant distress for herself and for my family. However, the excellent assistance and support from Shufen and the NCCS have given my mother great comfort and we really appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Tung
