Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close with survivors going on a cruise to celebrate life

Saturday, 7 Nov 2009

  • Fun-filled four-hour evening cruise for survivors and family to enjoy quality time together.

Singapore, 7 Nov 2009 – As a finale to the Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2009, 260 people, many of whom are breast cancer survivors, will set sail on Saturday, 7 th November, for a four-hour fun cruise to celebrate their victory over cancer.

Dubbed as the “Pink Ribbon Cruise”, the event is organised by the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and Singapore General Hospital, and supported by Breast Cancer Foundation, Health Promotion Board, National University Cancer Institute, Singapore, Singapore Cancer Society and Tote Board.

On board the 36-metre Catamaran will be the breast cancer survivors, their families, friends and accompanied by healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses and volunteers from NCCS.

Project chairman Dr Ho Gay Hui, Senior Consultant at the Department of Surgical Oncology of NCCS said the event is an apt symbolisation of breast cancer patients’ journey to recovery. “Having won the battle against cancer, it is for the survivors to look forward to a smooth sailing journey and look forward to the horizon.

“We want to send the message to all breast cancer patients that they will not journey alone. Their families, friends and healthcare partners are always on hand to be with them,” said Dr Ho.

Unlike other cancer patients, breast cancer patients often take a harder hit psychologically when the patient loses one or both breasts as the breasts is seen as the emblem of womanhood. “As such, we strongly urge women to do their monthly breast self-examination and go for regular mammography if they are 40-year-old and above. This is not just about saving their breasts but, more importantly, about saving their lives,” stressed Dr Ho.

Wearing different shades of pink, participants will gather at the Singapore Cruise Centre before sailing off at 5pm on Saturday. There will be games, performances by Peranakan artistes, health quizzes, a sumptuous dinner and even karaoke for all to sing their hearts out!
