Generous Donors Give At Least $7.4 Million For NCCS GALA Dinner To Support Cancer Research And Needy Cancers Patients
Thursday, 3 Sep 2009
Singapore, 3 Sep 2009 – The National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) will hold its 10th Anniversary gala dinner, the “Gala of Hope”, on 4th September 2009 at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore with President S. R. Nathan as the Guest-of-Honour
The aim of the gala dinner is to raise funds for cancer research and help needy cancer patients.
Mr Peter Fu of Kuo Group, Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd and Lee Foundation have collectively pledge a total sum of $7 million. Additionally, NCCS has also received the support of numerous organisations, including the Pontiac Land Group which is sponsoring the banquet and venue. This has resulted in another $400,000 raised by NCCS through direct donations and sale of tables/seats for the gala dinner.
Part of NCCS success today is a result of the contribution from many generous corporation and individuals.
“We are thankful for the support from the business community that has by and large weathered the storm well and gallantly stood by us despite the challenges they are still facing. They understand and appreciate that helping the under privileged is a continuous effort and that the more we know about cancer through our research programme the better it will be for everyone,” said Prof Soo Khee Chee, Director of NCCS.
Prof Soo added: “We are currently getting some good insights into liver among other cancers, with our ongoing clinical trials. Patients are already benefitting. We hope to do more. This is where the money raised for the NCC Research Fund will give a much needed boost.”
The Centre hopes to raise more funds through the auction of three paintings at the gala dinner. Two of which were generously contributed by Mr Ong Kim Seng, a 1991 Cultural Medallion recipient who makes his mark in watercolour painting and the other by an Indonesian artist renowned for her portraits of Indonesian maidens, Ms Josephine Linggar.
Guests can also pledge their support via two toll numbers open from 4th to 11th September: 1900 112 2101 (for cancer research) or 2102 (to help needy cancer patients) at $100 per call; drop their cheque or cash into a donation box or donate using credit card at the donation booths.
Public who also wish to lend a helping hand may write a cheque payable to the “NCC Research Fund” in support of cancer research or “Cancer Research and Education Fund” to help cancer patients in need. Alternatively, they may email to NCCFoundation@nccs.com.sg for more information.
