Thursday, 6 Aug 2009

  • He has used proton therapies for many major cancers, i.e. head and neck, lung, breast and prostate.

Singapore, 6 Aug 2009 – One of the world’s leading names in proton radiation treatment Dr Jerry Slater, delivered his lecture on “Proton Therapy: The future of Radiation Therapy or a Passing Fad?” at the National Cancer Centre Singapore.

His lecture was the eighth in the Humphrey Oei Distinguished Lecture series organized by NCCS.

Dr Jerry Slater, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Medicine at Loma Linda University (LLU), is one of the pioneers of hospital-based proton radiation therapy. He designed the treatment protocols under which proton radiation treatment was initiated at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) in 1990, and has since led the clinical applications and research at the center.

His fundamental commitment is to maximise the potential of radiation to effectively treat cancers and other diseases, while minimizing or eliminating radiation-related side effects. He has been involved in many successful clinical studies of proton therapies for many major cancers, such as those of the head and neck, lung, breast and prostate.

Dr Slater has conducted research to further enhance the precision of protons through engineering advancements, including improved delivery system such as robotic position and active beam scanning.

NCCS Director Prof Soo Khee Chee said: “NCCS is proud to host Dr Slater. His tireless contributions towards the fight on cancer have been nothing short of exemplary, with the results of his work having a profound effect on millions of cancer patients. Without a doubt, he holds the admiration and respect of many and so I’m sure all local medical professionals will be looking forward to hearing his thoughts and opinions.”

In his long and illustrious career, Dr Slater has also authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as several book chapters and presentations.
