Singapore, 31 Jul 2009 – The National Cancer Centre Singapore was pleased to host world renowned stem cell scientist Dr John E. Dick to deliver his lecture on Cancer Stem Cells: Fact or Fiction. Today's lecture was held at the NCCS Lecture Hall and was the 7 th in the Humphrey Oei Distinguished Lecture Series.
The Humphrey Oei Distinguished Lecture Series aspires to be one of Singapore’s leading forums for intellectual inquiry and discussion in cancer research.
Dr Dick is currently a Senior Scientist, and Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. He is the Program Director in Cancer Stem Cells-GENESIS Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell Biology.
Dr Dick’s research focus on normal human blood and leukemic stem cells has greatly advanced our understanding of the origins of leukemia. By developing an in vivo repopulation assay, his laboratory showed that tumours are composed of cells with different properties and that only a small proportion of human leukemic cells are capable of initiating human leukemia in immuno-compromised mice.
Dr Dick’s work has been widely recognized and won him many awards including the 1997 Michael Smith Award of Excellence (MRC) and the 2000 Robert Nobel Prize (NCI Canada). Dr Dick has also been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada Canadian Academy of Science.
