Understanding Arm Swelling in Breast Cancer: Prevention & Treatment

For Breast Cancer Patients & Healthcare Professionals

About 100 people came down to the National Cancer Centre Singapore on 18 October, Saturday afternoon to learn more about the prevention and treatment of Lymphoedema, or arm swelling as a result of Breast Cancer.

This public forum and workshop was conducted in support of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2008, a campaign dedicated to increasing awareness and emphasising the importance of early detection of Breast Cancer.

Participants at the event received goodie bags inclusive of organic brown rice, Newater and Vitagen.

Jointly organised by the National Cancer Centre Singapore and the Singapore General Hospital, the event started with a workshop for breast cancer patients who learnt about the prevention and Non-Surgical Treatment of Lymphoedema, using massage techniques and bandaging, from Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists from the Singapore General Hospital.

The 43 participants of the workshops were split up into small groups to have a practical session by the therapists.

The session was concluded by a public forum, where more information about the causes and various treatment of Lymphoedema were explained to the participants.

Many of the participants responded that they felt less anxious and fearful about Lymphoedema after attending the workshop and public forum.
