Thursday, 30 November 2006

Singapore, 30 November 2006 - Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH) and National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) announced today a collaborative effort to provide highly affordable and quality inpatient rehabilitation to cancer patients.

With this collaboration, NCCS will refer its patients to KWSH for short-term rehabilitation services, which includes the treatment of pain. At an affordable ward charge of $40 per day, KWSH provides 24 hours medical and nursing care in a serene environment surrounded by gardens. KWSH also provides ambulance transport to and fro the acute hospitals for the patient ’ s appointments and treatments at a subsidized rate of $10 per return trip.

“We are very pleased to work together with NCCS to provide quality and affordable cancer rehabilitation services to cancer patients which is in line with the vision of KWSH, that is to promote the well-being & dignity of the people we serve through compassion, ” said Ms Yim Sau Kit, Chief Executive Officer of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital.

“The aim of this program is to help cancer patients and their families deal with the physical and emotional stress that comes with cancer. NCCS is confident that KWSH is able to provide quality medical and nursing care services to cancer patients and help them on the road to recovery,” says Dr Koo Wen Hsin, Head & Senior Consultant of Department of Medical Oncology, NCCS.

In preparation for this program, KWS has renovated Ward 2 in the hospital to be dedicated to provide cancer rehabilitation services and nurses have been sent to NCCS for attachment to be trained on the proper ways to care for cancer patients. In addition, doctors from NCCS will also make regular visits to KWSH to follow-up on the condition of the patients.

Ward 2 will be officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on the 2 nd of December when the hospital celebrates its 96 th anniversary in providing quality healthcare to the less fortunate in Singapore.

About KWSH
KWSH is a 96 years old charitable organization committed to look after the sick and needy. With staff strength of more than 200 employees, KWS occupies 14 blocks in a 6-acre compound. The facilities include In-patient Wards, a Physiotherapy Department, an Out-patient Department, a Day Rehabilitation Centre and a Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre. The newly renovated hospital wards 2 & 3 are now receiving patients referred to them from other hospitals for step-down care services.

Most of their patients come from the lower-income families whose hospital charges are subsidized by KWSH. The hospital is therefore heavily dependent on the public's support and donations to meet their annual operating expenses of about S$8.5 Million.
