Cancer and Survival:
NCCS believes cancer NEED not be the end of life’s journey.

Monday, 29 May 2006

Singapore, 29 May 2006 - As part of World Cancer Survivors Day, National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) will spearhead an inaugural 4 month 'I can' campaign - from June to Sep 06 to associate cancer with survival and not death. “ In the last 30 years we have made substantial progress in the battle against cancer.” said Prof Soo Khee Chee Director, NCCS. Prof Soo attributed this progress to three factors:

1.

Researchers’ increasing ability to identify the various biological factors involved in the development of cancers and exploit them to develop markers for early cancer diagnosis and targeted treatment.

2.

Increasing collaboration among people of different disciplines working together. For some cancers, this collaboration has substantially increased the number of survivors. These cancers include head & neck, lymphoma, breast and colon cancers.

3.

Development of new drugs and treatment regimes. These have substantially increased the survival rate of cancers like testicular cancer and leukemia. “We anticipate that in the near future newer drugs and treatment modalities will come on stream. This will transform what was previously a death sentence into a treatable chronic disease.” said Prof Soo Khee Chee Director, NCCS

The centre also hopes that more cancer survivors will access psychological and social and emotional support to cope with cancer. This would allow them to enjoy quality of life and lead productive lives.

“This I Can” campaign signals to our community that life after cancer is a reality with adequate public health education, proper screening and support. “ said Prof Soo Khee Chee Director, NCCS

‘Cancer is not an inevitable end. As we celebrate World Cancer Survival Day globally, we need to reflect on the possibilities and continue to salute and support cancer survivors.’ Dr Tay Miah Hiang, Chairman, Patient Education and ‘I Can Survive’ campaign committee 2006.
