Introduction

The Pharmacy Department is committed to provide a safe, effective and cost-conscious medication use process. We work closely with health care colleagues to promote optimal drug therapy outcomes in patients; to educate patients, healthcare practitioners and students about optimal drug therapy; and to conduct and support drug-related research.

The department strives to be the pharmacy leader in oncology pharmacy practice through the development of innovative services in patient care, education and training programs and practice-centered research.

Staffing

The operations are supported by various categories of staff comprising 11 pharmacists, 11 pharmacy technicians, 2 retail sales assistants, 1 storekeeper and 1 healthcare assistant.

Continuing Training & Professional Development


As part of Continuing Training & Professional Development Department of Pharmacy conducts Aseptic Technique And Cytotoxic Reconstitution Programmes for professionals in the field.

Training Objectives
To develop basic understanding on the theoretical and practical aspects of aseptic dispensing practice and safe handling of cytotoxic drugs.

To acquire aseptic dispensing techniques for the preparation of sterile pharmaceuticals To obtain an overview of equipment and facilities requirements in cytotoxic drug reconstitution.

To be informed of policies and standard governing the practice.

Programme Duration
The program can be tailored to meet individual needs, depending on trainee’s requirement. Minimum duration for training is 2 weeks.

Teaching Methodology
Group discussion, workbook and practical sessions

Assessment
- Trainees will be assessed through their workbook and practical sessions.
- Aseptic technique validation test (for trainee already equip with basic skill only, each validation costs S$200.00)

Certification
A certificate of participation will be awarded to trainees.

Research

Pharmacists collaborate with health care colleagues to initiate pharmacy practice research and drug use evaluation studies to promote rational drug therapy. Current emphasis in research includes practice guidelines, patient education, drug safety/monitoring, and issues in supportive care.

Pharmacists initiated collaborative research activities that started in 2007 includes,

  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) usage in local ambulatory cancer patients
  • Evaluating the use of AI and bisphosphonates in ambulatory cancer centre
  • Rapid infusion rituximab: its tolerability and safety at an ambulatory cancer centre
  • An evaluation on incidence and management of EGFR inhibitors associated dermatological toxicities
  • An evaluation of hematopoietic growth factors utilization at a major cancer centre in Singapore
  • Cetuximab-induced hypomagnesemia: A study on incidence, risk factors and symptom management
  • Safe handling of oral anti-cancer drugs in NCC: Perspective from patients
  • Identification of failure in chemotherapy preparation using FMEA
