As part of professional development, we seek to continually upgrade our knowledge and skills to enhance our nursing clinical practice. Nurses are encouraged to learn, grow and contribute to shaping our practices through continuing education programmes and research.
Nursing continuing education allows nurses to keep abreast with advances and changes, both in general and oncology nursing practices so that it can be incorporated into our care delivery. It has a high priority in the NCC and includes in service education, conferences & seminars, attachments and visits, grand rounds, training sponsorship awards and WHO Fellowships.
In-service Education
In-service education sessions are held regularly, either through unit-based or department level, to meet the education needs of the staff. Doctors or senior nursing staff, are invited to share with the nurses on specific topics.
Conferences and Seminars
Besides hosting the Second Regional Oncology Nursing Conference “New Frontiers; Making a Difference” in May 2002.
NCC Nursing had co-hosted with ISNCC (International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care) the 15 th ICCN (International Conference on Cancer Nursing) in 2008.
Our staff are encouraged to upgrade their knowledge and skills through attending external conferences, talks and seminars. They are frequently sponsored to attend conferences, talks and seminars pertaining to their roles and functions, for both overseas and local events.
Attachments and Visits
We provide opportunities to both foreign and local nurses from other hospitals for practical attachment and training. Nurses could share their findings, insights, experience and advice. Attachments will be customized to fit the objectives of the nurses requesting for the attachments.
We also provide a practice setting for the local Advanced Diploma Oncology Nursing students. They are attached to the NCC for clinical observations, which will enhance their understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment modalities pertinent to the management of cancer patients.
Grand Rounds
Opportunities for learning and sharing are also established through grand rounds which are held every bi-monthly. This is a platform whereby nurses who have been for overseas attachment, hospital visit, and courses shared their knowledge on the latest advances in nursing practices, resource allocation & management, research, evidence-based practices, creative innovations and management theories. It allows time for reflection on their own practices, as well as trigger the nurses to think “out of the box”.
Training Sponsorship Awards
Various training sponsorship awards are available to develop our nurses as part of their career advancement. Some of the awards include HMDP, Alice Lee Institute of Advanced Nursing Scholarship Awards and NCC Learning awards.
WHO Fellowships
We collaborate with WHO in the provision of Fellowships. Through the WHO Fellowships, international and regional nurses can be attached to the NCC.
