Because mobile phones and
their base stations are two-way radios, they produce
radio-frequency radiation (that's how they communicate),
and they expose people near them to radio-frequency
(RF) radiation. However, because both the phones and
the base stations are low power (short range), the RF
radiation exposure levels from them are generally very
low.
New evidence is growing fast about health risks from
the microwaves radiated by the mobile phones. It is
the same type of radiation as in a microwave oven, although
it is in much smaller doses.
Research studies in rats show that cells and the genes
(DNA) will be affected and damaged by mobile phone radiation.
In some experimental reports, mice exposed to mobile
phone radiation over a period of time are found to have
twice the risk of developing cancers, brain tumours
and serious birth defects.
Evidence from human studies of mobile phone radiation
shows a possible link with raised blood pressure and
direct brain warming affecting brain function in heavy
users. Like the microwave oven, the microwaves of the
phone heat our human cells. Scientists have reported
that these microwaves could directly damage the genes
in cells. There is also increasing concern about children
using mobile phones. Children are more sensitive to
anything that affects their bodies. In fact, children
absorb microwaves at three times higher the level than
for an adult
