Most cancers occur
in older people because it may take many years of genetic
mutation to trigger a tumour. The damage done to the cells
by carcinogens is permanent. Over time as cells suffer greater
exposure to carcinogens, the damage adds up, causing a greater
chance that cancer will develop. Different mutations may also
occur years apart.
