Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, Princes and Princesses
To all the Survivors, warriors, friends and colleagues who have just completed the Mt Faber trail, a very warm welcome to this Hill of Hope event organised by NCCS and co-organised by SGH, as part of our Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign.
Today, we have a special group of individuals here – 70 strong in fact, and many with their family members, to show us the difference that they have made in their lives, and the difference that they want to make in our community.
To these survivors, I must say you have all walked a good walk, just as you have fought a good fight against breast cancer. Today’s climb is only a symbolic act, just like the uphill battle against the malignant one…. Because you have triumphed, you have therefore shown to others that they too can succeed.
Survivors tell us that their fight involved a lot of family and peer support. And that’s exactly what we have done this evening – in our own capacity as a family member, nurse, administrator, researcher, doctor, and volunteer, we have done the trail together with our survivors, to show our support and love for them, and to show our support towards cancer causes.
The Hill of Hope is about perseverance. It’s about finding a purpose. With this climb, we want to send out the message that as long as we are united as a team, cancer can be conquered.
Too often we are reminded of the harms that cancer can do to our body. But it is rare that we actually think of what cancer cannot do. And so before I end, I would like to share with you a short passage by an anonymous writer. I hope this will bring encouragement and optimism to all of you:
“What Cancer Cannot Do
Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple Love, nor shatter Hope
It cannot corrode Faith, kill Friendship or suppress Memories
It cannot silence Courage.
It cannot invade the Soul.
It cannot steal eternal Life, and it certainly cannot conquer your Spirit.” |
It leaves me now to thank everyone present: our survivors, volunteers, colleagues, and the BCAM committee members; our exclusive sponsor Pfizer, Jewel Box and Arts for Health for making this event a success.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Ms Susan Teh who has made a personal donation to NCCS in support of our cancer cause.
Let us now make some new friends and enjoy the evening together.
Thank you.
