Arts For Health at NCCS

Specially organised for patients, Arts for Health aims to promote wellness in National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) through the arts. Patients, visitors, staff and the community can participate in creative arts programmes such as concerts, workshops and exhibitions that bring healing to the body, mind and soul.

With holistic support, we can continue our fight against cancer.

The Arts for Health is supported by the SingHealth Foundation.

Our Programmes

MusicWorks

Kirsten and Megan, talented 10-year-old students from Singapore Chinese Girls School performed soothing harp and cello music on 14 December 2006, 15 March 2007 and 11 December 2007.

Kirsten Tan is an accomplished performer who has made appearances at numerous events including the 1st Singapore HarpFest, the Charity Christmas Concert at the Arts House, the Esplanade Concert Hall’s "Beautiful Sunday" series and the National Arts Council Music for Everyone Series.

Megan Lim has been learning the cello since she was 6 years old. She's now studying under Yu Jing of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Megan's favourite composer is Mozart and has named her dog after the composer.

ACJC Harp Ensemble

The Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) Harp Ensemble has been actively promoting harp music since its inception in 2001. Always keen to share the beauty and enchantment of the celestial instrument with the community, the Harp Ensemble has performed for various college functions as well as external organisations at prominent venues. On 16 May 2007, they shared the heavenly aura and exquisite timbre of the harp with our patients and staff at the Centre.

Guitar Ensemble at Republic Polytechnic (GENRE)

GENRE, which stands for guitar ensemble of republic polytechnic, was founded by Miss Jennifer Chay along with other few enthusiastic RP students. They started off with just a small number of members, which has gradually grown to around 50 members now. They have performed at both internal and external events including community-related ones such as Project Dreamscape (2005), mass signing with Singapore Association for the Deaf on National Day (2005), and the Arts For Health programme at the NCCS (14 June 2007).

NUS High School (NUS-HS) Chamber Ensemble

Chamber Ensemble – a requirement for all NUS-HS students specializing in music – is defined as music for small ensembles in which players perform one to a part, generally without a conductor. At the heart of this art form is a spirit of collaboration. Democratic in essence, chamber music demands that each individual engage in a close musical dialogue with the other performers – through collective musical instinct, experience, knowledge, and talent guide the process of interpreting, rehearsing, and performing. Many patients, their caregivers and our staff enjoyed themselves when the ensemble played a wide genre of music at the ATU on 10 October 2007.

Ministry of Bellz (MOB)

Established in June 2007, the Ministry of Bellz (MOB) is Singapore’s first privately funded ensemble outside schools and churches.

Staff and patients had the privilege of enjoying this unique and melodious performance by the 8-member handbells ensemble, led by Baba Damien Lim, as they played a repertoire of holiday tunes such as “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” to heightened the festive mood in the centre on 13 December 2007.

Craft and Conversation

Exploring your creativity in art & crafts work.

Anna Ng and company shared their techniques of transforming usual household objects, simple materials and recyclables. They created paper and beaded flowers as well as decorative ornaments. Creations were simple to do and yet pretty to behold.

PaintWorks

Dabbling with paint can be therapeutic. Together with our volunteers, our ATU patients and their caregivers expressed themselves with paintwork during a session on 15 March 2007.

Spring Embroidery Project

Help us to make it bloom...

Volunteers from different parts of the world were involved in this embroidery project that took place from January to June 2007. Patients and their caregivers either joined these volunteers at the booth or brought a square of cloth with them to work on at their own pace at home or while waiting in our outpatient clinic.
